STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — It was nothing but good news on Rose Court Saturday night after a volunteer assisting with the search of a missing 12-year-old girl found her near the South Street Seaport in Manhattan, some 28 hours after her disappearance.

Katarina Rikic of Silver Lake was brought by police to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton around 10:30 p.m. Saturday night for a tearful reunion with her parents, ending more than a day of frantic searching by her family, police and hundreds of volunteers.

She appeared to be unharmed and in good condition when she emerged from an unmarked police car at the RUMC emergency room entrance.

The young girl was last seen on Friday evening at 5:30 p.m. leaving her home after a fight with her mother, sources said.

Details of how Katarina got to the Seaport and what she was doing there were unavailable Saturday night. But early in the day, police said they were treating it as a missing persons case, not as an abduction.

As she exited the back of the police car Saturday night, her mother and father ran over and hugged her. Friends and family who had helped in the search were also there, hugging and congratulating one another.

“Once police confirmed it was her, there was just a tremendous celebration,” said Kris Sjolander, a neighbor who has known the Rikic family most of his life and participated in the search.

When the news first broke that Katarina had been found, her parents, friends and family returned to the family home at 16 Rose Court from acommand post in the gym at Blessed Sacrament School in West Brighton.

Katarina’s plight gripped Staten Island for the day. Hundreds of volunteers, including many who did not even know the girl or her family, had reported to the gym to help in the search.

Prayers were said for Katarina during Saturday evening religious services across the Island. Concerned Staten Islanders spread the news rapidly through social media. Advance reports posted on SILive.com were shared more than 5,000 times on Facebook. Staten Islanders sent thousands of text messages and took to Twitter to spread the word about the missing child.

By 10:15 p.m., the NYPD gave the official confirmation: She was located, she was safe, and she was on her way home.

Sjolander, the neighbor, along with nearly 200 other volunteers, spent much of 24 hours posting flyers, knocking on doors and searching the borough for any sign of the missing child. He said the biggest help was social media to quickly spread the word of her disappearance.

”I’m not a Facebook guy, but when it comes to this sort of thing it’s a useful tool and really worked in getting more people to help,” Sjolander said outside the emergency entrance at RUMC Saturday evening, just moments after the Rikic family was reunited with Katarina.

”The family is thrilled and happy to have their daughter back,” Sjolander said. “You can’t help but think the worst when something like this happens, but right now everyone is just relieved.”
